Prototypes : Motion Painting
This visualization was featured as a part of the Emerging Technologies Exhibition at SIGGRAPH 2001 (more info about the exhibition here)

The visualization presents a recent history of the activity level in a room. It uses a web camera to continuously measure the activity level, by calculating the amount of movement in the pictures from the camera during a certain time span. The activity level is then used to determine the color of a portion of the screeen representing the time when the activity level was measured. The result is an abstract color composition that develops slowly over time, reminiscent of paintings by artists such as Mark Rothko and Bridget Riley.

The visualization is featured in the paper Informative Art: Information Visualization for Everyday Environments, presented at GRAPHITE 2003, in Melbourne, Australia.
