Prototypes : Activity Wallpaper
This visualization is designed as an example of ambient information visualization, exploring ways in which information presentation can become an integrated part of an environment.

Activity Wallpaper is a way of providing a place with an electronic "memory" of how it is inhabited, i.e., how people move around, socialize, make noise or in any observable way spend time there. It does this by collecting activity data using various sensors, and displaying an interpretation of this data, in the form of an ambient visualization, back into the place.

The visualization is displayed using a projector and the pattern is inspired by patterns from wallpapers and tapestries. The pattern in the visualization changes appearance, both in terms of shape and color, depending on the activity in the place. Each row in the visualization represents one day, and so the visualization provides a week-long memory of how the activity in the place changes over time.

The visualization is featured in the poster paper Activity Wallpaper: Ambient Visualization of Activity Information, presented at DIS 2004, in Cambridge, MA, USA.
